John J. Timmerman (1908-2004) was a 1931 graduate of Calvin College who returned to his alma mater in 1945 to teach English. He retired as faculty emeritus in 1975. During his time there, he was a Fulbright Lecturer at the Free University of Amsterdam. He was beloved as a brilliant teacher with a lively intellect and a sensitive heart. A masterful stylist, known for the economy of his style, his writing was filled with grace, wit, deep literary awareness, and a warm sensitivity to human nature. His work appeared in numerous journals and he served as an editor of Reformed Journal for several years.
