I thought I was the only one in the world who thought Ash Wednesday was their favorite worship service. Thank you for your post, Jes! You just made me a better person and a better preacher. "… I stand up for total depravity. I stand up to the fact that I am one giant, messy, sinner like you and you and you and you…" Simply brilliant. I'm smiling out loud!
I'm a bit bummed/surprised that so few stood up at Conversations, but happy at your willingness to think that it's not all that bad to stand up for TD. The nature of redemption is always connected to the nature of sin. The great problem, it seems to me, which is the result of the Enlightenment and Protestantism for my money, is that we think we are pretty capable. If we aren't that bad, there's not much for God to do. TD reminds me that I should always do what I wish others would do: not believe that I have all the answers or unmitigated truth.
